EDM 310 - Google Presentation Wrap Up

Class,

First, I wanted to thank everyone for such wonderful and interesting Google Presentations about yourselves. We learned alot about you and this is a key ingredient in the academic community. You are going to work with a number of different people from a number of different background with a number of different future goals! You will also work with students that have similar differences. This is one of my favorite things to do in this class because I love interacting with people, especially future educators, and you are all so interesting.

I emailed everyone some comments from me and from your peers. All the comments I sent were constructive and positive.

I am listing here a couple of observations that I and the class have to help you all in the future when either teaching or working with others in a similar situation. Keep in mind this is all constructive criticism and we are here to help each other now.

1. Spelling and Grammar have to be very important in the teaching field. Try and make sure that you never do anything that involves writing without checking the spelling and the grammar. Keep in mind that others entrust you with educating them and if you can't spell or use proper grammar their confidence in you will waver. So, make spelling and grammar a priority!

2. A good speaking voice. You must have a good speaking voice as a teacher. You can command a room with your presence and speaking voice. Not only do you have to get your material across vocally but you must maintain order in a classroom and your voice can be a great tool to do that. So, try and work on being a good speaker.

3. Time management is an important factor in being a teacher. You must make sure that you stay within a reasonable time limit when you are engaging in any activity with your students. You can talk to long and lose your audience when teaching and it is very difficult to get them back once they are lost. Try and be efficient and thorough when you are scheduling your time.

4. Be appropriate. As stated earlier, there is a very diverse population in the teaching field and you need to be sensitive to all. Avoid anything that would be considered inappropriate of offensive to others. Sometimes it is a joke or a story or even a word that can offend and frustrate another person. This is something that we need to take very seriously as educators and should really spend time on before we move out into the teaching world.

5. Some general things to think about when delivering a presentation are backgrounds, fonts, pictures, wording, length of presentation and so on.

Overall, I think this was a great activity for us and I think we not only learned about Google Presentation and how to use it but about some of our peers and this helps us see the wide array of people we will meet in our future endeavors!
